Spider-Man Sketches

Been awhile since I've posted on here. So here's some Spider-Man sketches I've been playing around with in Photoshop. I usually do a lot of pose sketches like these in Photoshop and usually don't take them any further than this. Usually what I'm trying to do with these is draw something which has a lot of movement and doesn't look stiff. You can see with the above sketches I was also working on making the hands look dynamic as well, especially the fingers.

Conan Work in Progress

Something new I'm working on. Thinking of trying to colour this in Painter.

Haru Sari

Back in January 2009 I did this layout sketch of Haru Sari, which is an online comic by a friend of mine.

I've always planned on finishing this drawing, but never really got around to it, until now.

So here's my finished inks. Using the above layout as a guide in Photoshop, I redrew all the characters and It's pretty interesting the progression from 2009 to now. I am planning on colouring this, just not sure when.

Hulk Progression Steps

Progress shots for my Hulk piece. Was going to originally do Hulk jumping through the air which he does a lot, and I really like that idea so maybe I will do that down the track.

The second idea which I did start inking was the full body pose. This would have some background elements such as the ground all cracked and broken around his feet.

I then went with the simple torso pose shot. I went with this since I figured I could work in more details which I couldn't do before. With this I've working in some feathering details which I don't normally do.

Girl in Progress Updated

So here's an update to the girl I'm working on in the previous post.

I'm still working on it of course, probably end up doing a torso shot in the final version. Also here's a clue as to what this piece is being used for.

Girl in Progress

Been awhile since I've posted here so here's a peek at something new I'm working on.

Sketches and a storyboard

I'm finishing up my first semester here and I'm currently busy finishing up the last 2 assignments in different subjects. One of the subjects is Drawing for Design, which is the class which had all the life drawing models.

Anyway the final assignment is all based around a suitcase, and one of the tasks was to do a short storyboard featuring the suitcase and a human figure in some way. So I did the story below.

If I had more panels, I probably would have had him getting dressed etc. but we were limited to 8 panels.

One of the other parts was to do an exploded diagram of the suitcase, which I used an isometric grid on.

Another part was to do some environment sketches of the suitcase in different locations. Now I found this hard to do, so I just did some quik 15-30 second sketches of people with bags in everyday environments. I ended up doing these with a copic marker.

Fruit Skate Skateboard Jump

Not totally happy with this, but these are some new Fruit Skate illustrations of Alex in various poses (pushing, jumping and standing) on his skateboard.

The hardest part with these is trying to keep the character look consistent in each drawing, which I don't think I really got right. But the purpose for which these illustrations will be used for they will be okay, since you wont see them side by side like this.

Fruit Skate Home Screen

So here's the idea I had planned for the Fruit Skate piece I uploaded earlier. I knew that I was going to have text elements added on to it, which I was I left the background not as busy as I felt it would be too much.

The logo was actually made up with a vector graphic I bought from Shutterstock here which I modified in Illustrator. The buttons was created by myself with the cog in the Options button being a free vector graphic I downloaded from here.

As this was also designed with the iPad in mind, I kept the buttons fairly large for fingers to touch. I'm thinking maybe the Play Game button should be a different colour to the rest, but not sure. Also the size of this is the actual size it would appear in an iPad (1024 x 768 res), and it's the size I will be making the Flash interactive design at.

Edit: I ended up changing the Play Game button colour to make it stand out more.

Fruit Skate Characters New

So Here's the finished version of the Fruit Skate characters I posted earlier. I'm thinking of drawing a close up of their faces, so when a player selects one of the characters, I can put the full figure with a large headshot next to it. Then perhaps add a character name or something.

Anyway I'll work all that out when I start assembling this in Flash, which will be pretty soon.

Life Drawing session - part 5

Ahh my final Life Drawing session for the semester, so sad :(

These are scanned in order of completion as well, so the first row and the first 2 of the second row are all 1 minute sketches, then you go into longer 3 minute poses. That is the general process as well, start of which short, gesture type poses to get you warmed up and get into the longer poses.

It's also interesting with these is everything is happening so fast generally, you don't have time to sharpen your pencil, so towards the end my line work becomes really broad and soft looking which I like as well. With any Life Drawing it's better to use a softer lead like a 2B than hard lead, to get these flowing lines happening.

Fruit Skate Characters

Another work in progress. This time with the Fruit Skate characters. I'm thinking of adding 2 more characters, maybe another guy and girl. Not sure yet, but think 4 would look better in game than 2.

Life Drawing session - part 4

Sketches from this weeks life drawing session. Next week will be the last session for the semester. Kinda sad since I enjoyed these life drawing sessions a lot. I also think they helped my artwork a lot as well.

Fruit Skate Revision Final

Finished version of my Fruit Skate piece which I finished today. There will be a new logo and some additional text pieces added to this, but thought I'd post up the finished colours without the text elements added.

I went back to my original colouring style with this piece which I think works really well. This is one of those pieces where everything just came together well. Like the background girl for example, that came from me just turning off the flats leaving just the shadows showing which I thought looked really awesome, so I used that in the final. Originally she was to be coloured in colours similar to the guy in front.

I'm also really happy with the green background. I think it helps pop the guy with the nice contrast to the red.

Fruit Skate Revision Progress

Here's a new work in progress picture and again, it's an updated Fruit Skate piece.

Going on from my previous post, I wasn't too happy with the overall pose, since I did want to work in another character somehow. So this is how this piece came about.

Each character here is being drawn on separate layers so I can move and scale each figure when I'm done into the final composition. At the moment, the guy is probably a bit too big for this type of shot where you have small figures with a large figure in the background.

There's a few other issues which I need to work on as well, such as working out if I should include some foreground elements to the guy so he's not just floating in the air. Overall I'm happy with the progress.

Fruit Skate Revision

Here's something I'm working on at the moment. This is part of a bigger picture for my Fruit Skate game. The final version of this will be the home screen image that you'll see when you start the game.

So I'll be finishing this up, then putting it into Flash to make up a working mock of how the game would work. The actual game graphics wouldn't be this detailed, but since this is the home screen I figured I could get more detail crazy.

I'm still deciding what to do with the background, if I should add in another character, or just do a shot of the in game environment in an interesting perspective.

Avengers Sketch Part 2

Did a new Avengers sketch. Hopefully looks a bit more dynamic then the last one.

Not sure who else I can add in this layout. Maybe add a character flying above.

Perspective Drawing

Did this for my drawing class. Dunno if I should work on it more, by adding in more details or just leave it as it is. I kinda like the unfinished look to it.

Avengers Sketch

Sketched this up in Photoshop. Might try and work in some more Avengers characters.

Life Drawing session - part 3

Had a pretty jam packed life drawing session today. All the drawings seen below are from 30 second poses, so these are done more for gesture drawing.

What I like most about these drawings is that they are done so fast, that you have to get the pose down quick, that as you go along you find yourself getting into the flow. I also like when the pencil wears down and you start drawing with this really flat pencil which has some nice flow to it.

The next drawings we did after all these gesture drawings, was to do some forced perspective type drawings. That is we had to take the model who was sitting in front of us, and try and redraw it from looking above and below.

We then finished up with some 5 minute poses.

So all in all a pretty jam packed session. Pretty much filled up my sketchbook now with all these sketches, will have to buy a new one.

Fruit Skate Concepts

So here's a look at how the finished concepts ended up for what I posted in my previous post. In the end I had to rush to make the deadline for the assignment, but pretty happy with how they turned out.

There is another 2 apps I designed, but they aren't as good as these ones.

From the drawing board

Here's some photos from my iPhone of something I'm working on at the moment for a class assignment. Got to design 3 apps for the iPad around a few selected theme ideas. This app here is a bit of a rip off Tiny Wings on the iPhone with some changes made to it, but I still like the idea of it.

Life Drawing session - part 2

Some life drawing taken from todays session.

Below is some 15 minute sketches. I think I need to do the under drawing in future with a blue pencil before going in with the pencil.

Life Drawing session

So I've started doing life drawing in my drawing class on Friday. It was pretty interesting exercise since I haven't done any life drawing since 1996 I think? Anyway it was mostly 1 to 2 minutes poses, with some 5 minute poses towards the end.

All of these images on the right are 2 minute poses I think of the model holding an umbrella.

Towards the end, we did a series of 6 poses with the umbrella which we were told to animate into a sequence in Photoshop, similar to the hand piece I posted before. You can see the end result below.

Below is some 5 minute sketching we did at the end of the session.

Some drawing exercises

Haven't been posting much since I've started the new semester for university, this time at a new uni. The best thing about this new course is it's more art focused than my old degree I was doing, so I am enjoying it a lot more.

Here is a drawing exercise we had to do, which is a short animated gif of 7 drawings of my hand going from open to close. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, seeing how it's not done like traditional animation with light boxes to make sure everything is smooth, but rather just drawing each hand separate then combined in Photoshop and hope it works lol

The other exercise we had to do was to draw a bike from memory, then draw a bike from observation.

Girl in Progress Final

So here it is, the finished version of the girl I've been working on for way too long!

Overall I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. There's a few little things I don't like, but it's at the point now where I want to move onto something new, and take the things I learned from this piece onto the next one

Girl in Progress Part 4

So here are the final inks pretty much. That said I might end up changing some things in the finished version of this piece.

So next step is to start doing the colours. The background will be painted in.

Girl in Progress Part 3

Been awhile since I've posted a progress of that girl I've been working on, so here's an updated pic.

As you can see I've made a lot of progress from the earlier versions I've been posting, and started to get close to a final drawing.

At the moment I'm still playing around with her design, mainly in the boot department. What I'm hoping for is to finish up the design and finish off the inks on the girl tomorrow, then start laying down some colours.

I also have a background in mind for this piece which is pretty ambitious for me, so not sure if I can pull that off just yet. Might end up with something a lot more simple.

My new baby... Wacom Intuos4 Large!

So today I picked up an Wacom Intuos4 Large tablet. My old tablet as you can see in the photo was an Intuos3 Medium size, so the larger size is a big change which I'm still trying to get used to.

One of the things I've noticed though, was it's easier for me to do thin linework on the larger tablet, since you can do long strokes.

Speaking of linework, I finally found the option in CS5 that turns that stupid opacity jitter off when inking, so you get a solid black line right away, rather than having to build up to a solid black line even when using the hard brush with 100% opacity!

Don't know why Adobe keeps changing the options from previous versions. This option is a little button next to the Opacity setting in Photoshop. You click it and bang! instant solid black lines!
